FDA Issues Warning on 7-Hydroxymitragynine Products — What Merchants Need to Know

On July 29, 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA press release) formally recommended scheduling 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) under the Controlled Substances Act. The announcement emphasizes that the action targets concentrated 7-OH products, not kratom leaf itself.

While the FDA’s statement raised concern about potential misuse—especially in the form of gummies, drink mixes, and shots—the recommendation is not a finalized law. The DEA must still go through a rulemaking process, including a public comment period, before any formal scheduling is enacted.

Is Payment Processing for 7-OH Affected?

No. Despite the FDA’s recommendation, High Wire Payments continues to fully support 7-OH powder and tablet vendors. None of our acquiring banks have pulled support, and we are still actively onboarding new 7-hydroxymitragynine merchants as of July 29, 2025.

Our direct bank partners understand the difference between kratom and its derivatives, and they are maintaining underwriting for compliant 7-OH vendors, especially those with Certificates of Analysis (COAs), GMP-compliant facilities, and proper disclaimers.

What Should 7-OH Merchants Do Now?

  • Ensure your product labeling is accurate and COA-backed
  • Avoid marketing 7-OH products toward minors or in deceptive formats (e.g. candy, gummies, etc.)
  • Comply with FDA guidelines for supplements and avoid unapproved medical claims
  • Consider shifting toward powder or capsule-only SKUs while public scrutiny increases
